Rep Power: 0 | Looking to find some information re: cost of living in Galway. I am considering attending a PhD program at NUIG starting in September and I'm not sure of bursaries or any sort of fellowships yet, thus I will probably have to take out a few loans to finance my education. Max loan (I think) is 20,000 (USD), which will cover 10,000 Euros (tuition/fees) and roughly 10,000/rent per year-- leaving not much left for living expenses. Thus, I would have to get a 20 hour per week job to cover other expenses such as food, entertainment and other miscellany. Would this be doable? Or am I going to wind up begging for change on the street corner?? :-) Having a hard time deciphering what an average rent for a 1 bedroom (shared) apartment or house might be. Any good 1-stop resources out there? Any tips or words of wisdom re: Galway, would be much appreciated. Many thanks! |

hello megy according to the NUI's website the costs of living are approximately as follows: The following information will give you an indication of the cost of living in Galway. These costs are an approximate only and will depend on each students individual needs. These costs are comparable to the costs associated with living in Limerick or Cork (2 other major cities in Ireland), but significantly lower than the cost of living in Dublin. Monthly Accommodation 340 Food 260 Books and other academic requisites 60 Clothes, laundry 60 Recreation 180 Other 100 Total 1,000 Nine month academic year 9,000 Daft.ie would be a good place to get an idea of the cost of sharing a n apartment. In order to work you must be registered as a full-time student on a course leading to a recognised qualification in order to work legally in Ireland on a part-time basis i.e. up to twenty hours per week and full-time during holiday periods. Galway is a nice place (I'm sure you've heard that a million times since announcing your plans) and the surrounding countryside is amazing. |
