Default relocating to Cavan

Hi everyone, i am relocating to Ireland with my husband, to his hometown in Co. Cavan. I have family in Ireland too, but not immediate family. (I am second generation irish). I will need to work, my husband had just retired from nursing. What do i need to put in place?
I currently have my Devonshire home on the market, and a sale could happen at any time. We are planning to visit Ireland in a few weeks, to look at properties, and visit a few employment agencies. We also need to look at schools for my 9yr old daughter. What else should i be looking at doing/putting in place now? A few advice pointers would be great from someone who is there, who has completed their move, etc. Any help is gratefully received!
What about national insurance? i pay that here, what do i need to find out about working in Ireland?, things like Child Allowance that i currently receive here - am i entiltled to anything in Ireland? PLEASE HELP!!

Hi Emmad,

Yes, your child allowance etc. should transfer ok from the UK to here, you will be paid it in Irish rates though. Ther is already a lot of information on this site about it so have a look around for it.

Regarding schools, you will have to wait until you arrive here if ypou don't kno wwhere you will be living, as you have to apply to each school directly for a place for your child.#

In order to work you will need your PPS number, that's like the UK national insurance number I think, applying for thatis straightforward and is also covered on this website already so have a look around for it.

A lot of people choose to move over to short-term accommodation and then look for longer term accommodation when they arrive. Have a lok at Daft.ie for rentals

Hi Emmad,

I am living in Co Cavan and really enjoy this part of Ireland. My daughter recently started Secondary School here and the process was somewhat painless!

I moved over from the states in March and started seriously looking for work in June. I really have had a hard time finding anything in my field in this area, so I took a retail job at the start of Sept to get by untill I can find what I really want.

Child Benefits at the moment are taking 6 months to get (when you first sign up) or at least that is what the office mentioned when I called about my application. As your husband is Irish (as is mine)...that helps speed up the process...maybe. Luck of the draw or maybe there really is a backlog as the office says

Rent here in our area is great! We would not even dream of buying for a couple of more years - prices are way out of line. 4-5 bedroom homes go for less then 800 euro a month. It is a renters dream really!!

Any more questions...please let me know and hope I can be of help.

Default Thanks!

Thanks for replying! Much appreciated!
We came over to Cavan last month, had a look around at houses, - yes they are a renters dream aren't they?!!! We've seen a few to rent & buy, and have sen a couple we really like. unfortunately, we're not quite in the position to do anything about it yet though. We checked out the local school.
I left CVs with several agencies, employers, for when i arrive. We're moving to Belturbet, so we're not too far from the north either. I'm getting quite excited, but stressed at the same time!!!
I'd forgotten how friendly the irish are, very unlike here, where no one speaks to you unless they really have to.
I did get bits of information, like having to go to the social welfare regarding pps numbers, health, etc.
Thanks for sharing information with me, hope your settling well, and enjoying it. ( i just wish someone would come along and buy my house!!)
Thanks again, ireblues!
Emma.
